What change were you wanting to make when you started Carbon?
I’d actually begun my weight loss journey just before starting with Carbon. Right after Christmas 2023, my sister and I made a pact to get healthy. We were both carrying at least 25kg of extra weight, feeling awful, menopausal, tired all the time, and just plain unhappy.
We signed up for a program on a psychology-based weight loss app, which helped us get started. But within four weeks, we’d both outgrown it. I didn’t like how it categorized foods as “green” (eat freely), “yellow” (eat moderately), and “red” (eat sparingly). This may not seem problematic, but for someone who’s yo-yo dieted most of her adult life, this kind of labeling felt too much like the old diet culture I was trying to leave behind. The app also counted daily movement and encouraged “eating back calories” earned through exercise. After three weeks, I hit a plateau—I believe because I was eating those “earned” calories and ended up out of a calorie deficit.
In January, I began researching menopause and learned about the importance of tracking macros—specifically protein and fiber intake. I didn’t know how much of these nutrients I was getting, so I started looking for a macro-focused app, which led me to Carbon Macro Coach. I checked out some videos on the app’s channel and decided to trial Carbon for a month while still using the other app. I came to Carbon because I wanted to lose weight, improve my health, and focus on macros, which the other app didn’t offer. Plus, I was eager to learn the “math” of calorie deficits!
What struggles did you encounter as you were working through those changes?
Honestly, I didn’t find it overly challenging—my mindset was strong from the start. I was fully committed to losing the weight, no matter how long it took, and I made a personal promise to stay consistent. I think that dedication has been a huge factor in what I’ve achieved. Discipline wasn’t an issue—I’ve got that in spades. I quit drinking alcohol entirely in 2018 and have made many big changes in my life since then, so I’m not afraid of taking on new challenges.
One initial hurdle was getting enough protein. I think a lot of women underestimate how little protein they’re actually consuming, and I had to learn how to boost my intake to hit my goals. During the first couple of weeks in a real calorie deficit, I felt some hunger now and then, but I found that simple adjustments—like avoiding late nights, spacing out my meals, and eating lower-calorie, high-protein foods—helped the hunger subside quickly.
Eating out was a bit challenging at first, but I’ve learned to make better choices and plan ahead. Overall, I’d say that consistency was my biggest aim, and staying dedicated to that has made all the difference.
What was different about Carbon?
Freedom, choice, and control! Carbon doesn’t feel like a “diet” because it gives me complete autonomy over my choices. There’s no pressure to eat specific foods or at certain times—no off-limits foods, no fasting (trust me, I’ve tried everything!), and no labeling foods as “good” or “bad.” Food doesn’t carry a moral weight, which has allowed me to enjoy eating a balanced, guilt-free way. With Carbon, I make my own choices while knowing that the “coach” behind the app has set the numbers to keep me on track. When I switch to maintenance, it’ll make the process so much easier, helping me find the right calories to keep the weight off without worry.
Tell us about the moment you realized Carbon was fundamental in solving your problem.
By the end of my first two weeks, I knew Carbon was different! The simplicity of it struck me: I could still enjoy my favorite foods without guilt, as long as I planned for them. My first week, I actually lost more than I’d planned, so Carbon adjusted my calories up—a great feature that took only a couple of weeks to fine-tune. I love that I can focus on eating in a way that feels natural while Carbon handles the math of deficits and, eventually, maintenance calories. It’s empowering to have that virtual “coach” in my corner, helping me stay on track without feeling restricted or controlled. I particularly love the 'Planner' tool.
Tell us what life looks like now that you are finding success with Carbon.
Life feels so much more energized and fulfilling now! I have a lot more energy, which has made me look forward to exercise and naturally incorporate more movement into my day. I can finally wear the clothes I’ve wanted to for ages, and clothes shopping has become something I actually enjoy—I’m proud of how I look, and that confidence has spilled over into all areas of my life.
I’m genuinely happier, and that’s had such a positive effect on my relationships. It’s amazing to receive daily compliments, with people even asking if I’ve had cosmetic work done because I look so much younger and healthier!
