1) What change were you wanting to make when you started Carbon?

Last year, I felt like I suddenly got “hit” by perimenopause. I could feel myself gaining weight. My sleep was terrible. My stress levels were high. And despite exercising A LOT, it didn't seem like I was making fitness gains. My jeans were tight, I was bloated, cranky, and unhappy. I didn’t want to be in any pictures with my daughter. I no longer felt like myself – the nutrition and movement that had worked for so many years suddenly wasn't effective. I knew I needed to do something. My friend, Hannah Huke, is a longtime Carbon user and after being inspired by her social media posts about her nutrition and fitness gains, I decided to give it a try! In February 2024, I downloaded the app on a whim while waiting for my daughter at the dentist. I didn’t have a food scale or a body scale but I just jumped right in that day! I started tracking my food, reading up about the benefits of high protein, and making shifts in what I was eating. I bought a food scale, a body scale, and after the first week, I started to see changes and feel better!

2) What struggles did you encounter as you were working through those changes?

I’ve been an avid exerciser since I was 18 (I’m 48 now) and for the past 9-ish years, I’ve eaten a mostly Whole30-style diet. As I got older, I saw that my body was no longer responding to the “same old, same old” thing I had been doing. With Carbon, I was able to really take a good, hard look at what I was consuming. My diet included too much fat and not enough protein. I was also eating a calorie surplus. For many years, I had resisted owning a scale or tracking my food as I thought it would bring me back to the “diet mentality” of my early 20s. But I flipped the switch and decided to look at this as an experiment in data collection. With Carbon, I was able to identify what I needed to eat to see a real change in my body. I cut way back on healthy fats and increased my protein, which helped me stay satiated throughout the day and stay asleep at night. I also decided to give up the occasional wine I was drinking – I knew it didn’t serve me and would not help me achieve my goals. At the same time, I pared back on my high level of exercise to become more intentional with my movement. I focused on progressive overload strength training and invested in heavier weights. I cut BACK on my daily steps – and focused on getting between 10K-12K/day instead of 15K+. I made a conscious effort to reduce my stress levels by realizing that some things were out of my control – and I could only control how I reacted.

3) What was different about Carbon?

Carbon was the first macro-tracking app I’ve used! I love that it has the coach function to help you stay focused on your goals week after week – and pivot as needed. The app is easy to navigate, affordable, has an awesome database of food, and I love the ability to scan food using either the barcode or the nutrition label. The support is incredible as well – I love the Facebook group and the Carbon team has been so responsive when I have questions or need help toward my goals. Carbon makes tracking fun – I actually find it really satisfying to log my food and explore how I am fueling my body!

4) Tell us about the moment you realized Carbon was fundamental in solving your problem.

I knew that to be successful, I couldn’t look at this as a “quick fix” so I focused on going “slow and steady.” I made my weekly weight loss goals manageable instead of aggressive. The first week, I was down 2.8lbs and then each week after, I kept losing. A few months in, I started to see real change – not just on the scale but in all aspects of my life. Carbon had made it so easy to identify where I needed to make shifts in my eating, track my nutrition, and give me small, weekly goals to focus on. I think my “ah-ha” moment came in May when I enjoyed a cupcake for my daughter’s birthday. I used the Carbon planner to make sure I could fit it into my day, and it just felt so easy. I loved that I didn’t feel deprived or like I was dieting. It was then that I realized this was working – and that this was something I wanted to keep doing indefinitely!

5) Tell us what life looks like now that you are finding success with Carbon.

I am a Carbon fan for life and have been telling EVERYONE I know about the app! I hit my initial weight loss goal by July 1 – and then kept going. I am now down another 5lbs from that for a total of 20lbs since I started. I am happier, more confident, and less stressed. I sleep through the night. My clothes fit great (and in many cases, are too big!) I am getting stronger in my workouts and leaning out while building muscle.  I am giving my body the right combination of macros, and it’s responding!! I am in this for the long haul – and have set some new goals for myself: Keep increasing my weights, have a 6-pack of abs by the age of 50, and become a certified macro coach so I can help more people (especially women in perimenopause) get fit and strong – and most importantly, feel like themselves again.
