What change were you wanting to make when you started using Carbon? 

I had started strength training in July 2022 after having been laid off from my job and having some extra time on my hands. I had always dreamed of being super toned, but thought I could never get there until my kids were older. Up until this point I worked out and did yoga occasionally and also walked regularly, but never lifted heavy. With the encouragement of my husband I started going every day and developed a habit. Right before this I had read "Atomic Habits" which I recommend to everyone starting a fitness journey - you can be anything you want to be, you just have to start taking the actions that align with that identity. Why can't I be a super fit and muscular 39 year old?! I was also turning 40 in July of 2023 so wanted to get in shape for that milestone. I also knew I wanted to set myself up before perimenopause started. I started using Carbon in October after seeing an IG post from Layne on how it differed from other trackers. I was always curious about macro tracking and knew that nutrition was the missing link to getting the body and mindset I was chasing. 


What struggles did you encounter as you were working through those changes? 

I had tracked forever but was never very consistent with it. Trackers always had me at 1600-1700 cals a day which always felt restrictive. I was always somewhat overweight with the exception of right before my wedding in May of 2013, then I had three kids and the weight came on. I would say it's been a long journey of discovery from that time. I did a Whole30 round in January of 2018 which I would say showed me I could abstain from alcohol and feel great. It also taught me the importance of eating lots of fruits and vegetables and fat along with protein as part of a healthy diet. I credit Whole30 with really kicking off my long journey, although I wouldn't ever do a round today!  I quit drinking in July of 2019 as I was tired of feeling like crap from 4 day hangovers and anxiety. Then after the pandemic in June of 2021 I got a new job after 10 years in the same role working for a restaurant group - there was always unhealthy food around in that role and eating in restaurants and I would say I really started concentrating on what I was eating when I left there. 


What was different about Carbon? 

The weekly check-ins are dynamic and help as you are either losing, gaining, or maintaining. 


Tell us about the moment you realized Carbon was fundamental in solving your problem.

I started eating in a whole new way when I was tracking macros and strength training. I lost 16 pounds from October 2022 to May of 2023 - I started working with a trainer in Feb of 2023 and put on about 10 pounds by Nov 2023, but remained the same size - it was clearly all muscle. My body composition has completely changed. 


Tell us what life looks like now that you are finding success with Carbon. 

I did another cut in Nov-March of 2024 and was pretty miserable at the fast rate of weight loss (1.5/week which got me down to 1600 cals) and I have learned I won't do that again! I started my first reverse in March of 2024 and gained around 6 pounds over 14 weeks - then did maintenance for 4 weeks. I'm currently at a cut at 2100-2200 cals and 160g of protein and I am going as slow as the app allows me - .7 pounds a week. I know I have put on a lot of muscle, so I want to see what that looks like with a bit of fat loss. So far so good! Now tracking is just second nature to me and it really helps me to stay focused having a full time job plus three kids. Nutrition and fitness is my priority - as is getting a good night's sleep! I am just really happy with how I have shown up for myself every day and very happy with how I feel and look and what I have accomplished. I am on this journey for life! I would recommend anyone using Carbon to have patience and consistency and to just understand that set backs and breaks will happen and life will get in the way, but it's important to always return to your why!
